[photo] The Yosemite Valley, California [12]
Medium: oil on canvas
Size: 30 x 50 in (76 x 127 cm)
Inscription: l/r "F. Schafer" in the artist's characteristic block-letter hand, underlined
Verso: u/r "$300.00"; l/r "The Yosemite Valley California."; "14" on each of three layers of the frame.
Provenance: In private collection, Napa County, California; to collection of Jerry and Sandy Grulkey, Vallejo, California, c. 1983.
Site: A view looking East up Yosemite Valley, California, from a point low on the South side, perhaps near Artist's point along the Madera road.
Description: The classic artist's view of Yosemite Valley, with El Capitan on the left, its upper half in shadow, a rather minimal Bridalveil Fall on the right (perhaps a late, dry summer scene) with Half-Dome barely visible through the haze, Sentinel Rock well below the horizon, and the Merced River barely discernible. The sky is blue with clouds just above the horizon. An Indian encampment in the middle distance on the right consists of one tepee and smoke from a campfire. There are three figures, one with an orange shirt mounted on a horse, a standing woman dressed in red, and a third, seated, dressed in blue. Only a few trees, all conifers, are within view and all are quite far away; the nearby landscape seems almost desert-like, with downed snags lying amidst dry grass. A snag lies atop a large boulder just below the encampment. (From the painting, 21 July 1998)
