| Description: | A steep, dark oceanside cliff stands at the left with nearby lighter rocks; cliffs continue far into the distance along the ocean under a stormy sky filled with both dark and light clouds. The greenish-blue sea surges in white breakers at the right. Some distance away a large, grey sailboat leans against the wind; on the horizon are a white sailboat and a steamer with a long smoke plume along with a white rock that resembles another sailboat. To the left there are many seagulls aloft, white against the dark cliffs and dark against the lighter sky. A brown log (possibly with a cross-spar that might indicate that it is a ship's mast) washes in the white surf against the rocks. (From the painting, 9 December 1989 and 21 July 1998.) |
