| Description: | A pastoral mountain scene in an unidentified region that has broadleaf forests; a view across a brownish dirt road, a small gully, and a bright-green grassy clearing to a house with shutters and a brick chimney in the middle-distant center. A dominating tree stands against the sky toward the right, a smaller one stands just to the left of the house. Several boulders lie at the side of the road against a rail fence, which descends into the gully. To the left of the gully the grass- and wildflower-covered terrain rises and is capped with brush and low trees; beyond this slope lies a blue lake with a sailboat in the distance. Chapparal-covered mountains in shades of pink and purple form a bowl-shaped horizon under a blue sky with gathering storm clouds. The painting is in the Luminist style. Although the photograph in the Butterfield & Butterfield catalog is nearly illegible, it appears to be of the same painting as in the Sotheby Arcade catalog. |
