Provenance: Sold 21 January 1984 for $3,250 + 10% by Phillips Fine Art Auctioneers & Appraisers, New York as lot 639 in an unidentified sale. Sold 12 December 1996 for $9,000 + 15% by Butterfield & Butterfield, San Francisco, as lot 3180 in sale 6514, American and California Paintings and Sculpture, to private collection; by descent circa 2016 to private collection, San Francisco, California.

Description: Six closely clustered tepees stand on a gentle grassy slope up to the right, surrounded by a score of Indians performing domestic activities. Nearby, a woman carries a child, another a papoose, a third walks with a child, a fourth sits. Above on the right are cliffs, behind a grove of trees. Beyond on the left is a deep valley, with a high mountain range on the other side. (From the photographs.)
Note: The painting is very similar to [Indian Encampment 2].
Identification: Descriptive title of unknown origin, from the 1996 sale catalog. The 1984 catalog spells the artist's name "Schater", uses the title Indian encampment, and gives the size as 36 x 46 inches, but the photographs are of the same painting.
