| Site: | A view south into Emerald Bay, near the southwest corner of Lake Tahoe. |
| Description: | The calm lake is to the left. The foreground shore is a very shallow slope cluttered with downed snags, behind which stands a grove of conifers including several standing snags. Behind the grove a dark ridge climbs steeply to the right with a lighter ridge at the right edge. Several of the conifers are tall enough to extend above the ridge and be silhouetted against the sky. Across the lake a low conifer forest stands at the edge of the water, behind which is a very gentle forested valley which leads abruptly to the base of a large snow-capped mountain range, which dominates the center of the scene. (From a monochrome photograph.) |
| Note: | 1. The scene and the composition are very similar to those of Morning on Lake Tahoe from Tahoe City and Morning on Lake Tahoe, California [2]. 2. A painting titled "Emerald Bay, Lake Tahoe" was offered as lot 146 on page 9 in the catalog of a 17 November 1885 auction in San Francisco but there is not enough information in that catalog to either include or exclude the possibility that it is the same painting. |
