Photo credit: Early California and Western Art Research, 1974
Medium: oil on canvas
Size: 28 x 38 in (71 x 97 cm) [see note]

Provenance: Offered for $1800 by Maxwell Galleries, Ltd., San Francisco, January 1974. In collection of Ivan B. and Elvira Hart, Oakland, California (date unknown); by gift in 1984 to The Museum of Sonoma County, Hart Collection, accession 84.37.13.
Reproductions: Early California and Western Art Research/Schafer slide #17 (color, 1974); The Museum of Sonoma County web site (color, 2016).
Site: A view from the Northeast of Mount Hood, Oregon, as seen from The Dalles, a gorge along the Columbia River.
Description: Tones of yellow and gold dominate the sky. The snow-capped peak of Mount Hood is in the center; a valley wall forms a triangle on the lower left sloping down to a river below on the right; farther to the right is a distant valley wall. (From a color photograph.)
Note: A note listing the Early California and Western Art Research slide, taken at the Maxwell Galleries, Ltd. offering, gives the painting's size as 19.5 x 29.5 inches but in a 16 September 1999 letter, Evangeline Tai, curator of the Sonoma County Museum, reported that its size is 28 x 38 inches.
Identification: Descriptive title of unknown origin, from the Early California and Western Art Research index. That index identifies the slide both with the 1974 Maxwell Galleries, Ltd. offering and the Sonoma Museum.
