[photo] [Bridal Veil Fall, Yosemite Valley 4]
Photo credit: William K. Dick, 1971
Medium: oil on canvasboard
Size: 18 x 12 in (46 x 30 cm) approx
Inscription: l/r "F Schafer", in the artist's characteristic block-letter hand, in red
Provenance: With Garzoli Gallery, San Francisco, 1971.
Reproductions: William K. Dick photo #133 (color, 1971)
Site: A view looking East up Yosemite Valley, California, with Bridalveil Fall and Cathedral Rocks on the right, and Sentinel Rock and Half Dome in the distance on the left, from a viewpoint very high up on the South rim of the valley.
Description: The foreground, middle distance, and background of the painting are distictly different. The background is a series of hazy ranges and cliffs, similar in color and texture to the clouds in the blue sky above. The midrange formation of Cathedral Rocks and Bridalveil Fall is mostly brown and sharply outlined, though not otherwise distinctly drawn. The foreground is a highly detailed clearing backed up with a few trees and overlooking the edge of the valley, in shades of green, beige, and brown. The front edge of the clearing is shadowed; a path leads to a sunny area and off between two boulders on the right. The foreground is cluttered with stones, rocks, branches, and grass. The combination of shadow and sun in the foreground, together with the three separate regions, is quite striking. (From a color photograph.)
Identification: Assigned, descriptive title.
