[photo] Bay of Santa Barbara
Photo credit: William K. Dick, 1972
Date: no date reported; probably c. 1886.
Medium: oil on canvas
Size: 30 x 44 in (76 x 112 cm) Inscr recto; not visible in photograph
Verso: said to be "Bay of Santa Barbara"
Provenance: In private collection, Denver "around 1891"; by descent to private collection, Denver, in 1969.
Reproductions: William K. Dick photo #85 (color, 1972); Alameda Free Library Clipping File (color, c. 1969)
Description: Swells from a blue ocean surround a brown rock island in the center and wash against the beach at the viewer's feet. At the lower left corner driftwood is trapped on a brown rock, while a log washes in the waves at the right. In the middle distance, brown rocky points surround the water from both sides; yet farther back the bay is surrounded with low hills. The sky is cloudy; a large flock of gulls is in the air just beyond the brown rock island. (From a color photograph.)
Note: The suggested date for the painting is based on reports of an 1886 trip to the Los Angeles area to sketch and sell paintings.
Legend: The Denver, Colorado, owner is said to have met Schafer in person and acquired this painting, along with six others by the artist, on a honeymoon trip to California around 1891.
Identification: Both photographs are of the same Denver collection. A note with the Alameda Library photograph gives the size as 29.5 x 44 in.
In index(es): Title list, coastal and marine scenes, Southern California scenes
