Some evidence has emerged that Schafer may have initially traveled from New York to San Francisco by steamship and the overland crossing by rail in Panama, so he may have taken the opportunity to sketch some of these scenes, especially the smaller ones. On the other hand, these paintings also may be part of a repertoire of such scenes painted by several nineteenth-century San Francisco artists, apparently to satisfy a market of buyers who came to San Francisco by a way of the Central American overland crossing.
