In these paintings, the scene is of limitless desert, rather than of mountain valleys. Despite some titles that suggest Great Plains locales (none of which were assigned by the artist), both the depicted topography and the occasional artist-assigned title suggest that many of these paintings are scenes of the Modoc people in the lava beds of Northern California, in an area known now as Lava Beds National Monument. Although several of these scenes depict tepees whose design originated on the Great Plains, tepees of that design were, by the 1880s, widely used by other tribes.
