Frederick Ferdinand Schafer Painting Catalog

Problematic painting record FFSp0851

[photo] [Mount Hood]

Medium: oil on canvas
Size: 20 x 30 in (51 x 76 cm)
Inscription: unsigned
Verso: none reported
Provenance: Offered 6 April 2008 by Clar's Auction Gallery, Oakland, California, as lot 2191 in sale 463 (not sold); then sold 8 June 2008 for $500+10% as lot 2207 in sale 466.
Reproductions: Clar's Auction Gallery 6 April 2008 and 8 June 2008 sale catalogs (color).
Attribution: Unsigned, described in the Clar's Auction Gallery sale catalogs as "manner of Frederick Schafer". Although the overall composition and palette are somewhat Schafer-like, there are enough concerns that it is doubtful that this painting should be attributed to Schafer. The painting has no central focus, the foreground has little detail, and the canvas texture is visible. May be by J.J.Englehart.
Identification: Assigned descriptive title, apparently by Clar's Auction Gallery.
In index(es): questioned attributions
