Frederick Ferdinand Schafer Painting Catalog

Non-Schafer painting record FFSn0670

[photo] [Indian Encampment by a Lake]

Medium: gouache on unknown support
Size: 17 x 29.5 inches (43 x 75 cm; oval)
Inscription: l/l "Schafer"
Verso: back not yet examined
Provenance: A Muncy, Pennsylvania, estate, 2001; to private collection, Pennsylvania, 2001.
Attribution: The subject matter, palette, and composition are similar to that of Frederick F. Schafer's work. However, the signature is quite dissimilar to the signature appearing on other works by Frederick F. Schafer, with the absence of a first initial, each letter having at least one carefully rounded stroke, and a perfectly straight underline. The oval shape of the painting itself would be unique for Frederick F. Schafer. And the figure seated at the side of the tepee (looking almost as if it is painted on the tepee itself) is not typical of his work.

Several other paintings with this signature and other similar characteristics have emerged, all in the near midwest of the United States. The tentative conclusion is that there is another artist with surname Schafer who worked in that area. For a summary of what has been learned about this other artist, see One or two Kentucky (?) Schafers.

Identification: Descriptive, assigned title.
In index(es): questioned attributions
