[photo] Headwaters of the Columbia River

Medium: oil on canvas
Size: 30 x 50 in (76 x 127 cm)
Inscription: l/r "F. Schafer", underlined, in the artist's characteristic block-letter hand
Verso: No inscription on the canvas. On the upper stretcher bar, in faint pencil in an unidentified hand, "Headwaters *** Columbia / Riv"
Provenance: In collection of Bertha Gaut, Rolling Hills Estates, California, by 2006; offered 17 October 2006 (not sold) byJohn Moran Auctioneers, Inc., Pasadena, California as lot 154 in California & American Fine Art sale; sold 22 May 2007 for $3750 + 25% by John Moran Auctioneers, Inc., Pasadena, California, as lot 2139 in Antiques and Fine Furnishings sale.
Reproductions: John Moran Auctioneers, Inc. 17 October 2006 and 22 May 2007 sale catalogs.
Note: 1. The authority of the title from the stretcher bar inscription is unknown. Schafer is not known to have journeyed to that area of British Columbia. 2. The alternate title, apparently a descriptive title assigned before discovery of the stretcher bar inscription, is misleading—the painting actually depicts six mounted Indians, as well as a couple of bears.
Identification: Title from verso inscription. The 2006 and 2007 sale catalogs use an assigned, descriptive title. See Notes.
Other title(s): [Riverscape with three mounted Indians] (John Moran Auctioneers, Inc. sale catalogs)
In index(es): Title list, paintings not otherwise indexed by content
