[photo] Morning in the Adirondacks [2]
Medium: oil on canvas, lined
Size: 24.25 x 16 inches (62 x 41 cm)
Inscription: l/r "F Schafer", in the artist's characteristic block-letter hand (see note 2)
Verso: Said to be "Morning in the Adirondacks" before lining.
Provenance: In private collection, Kalamazoo, Michigan, by 1960; by descent to private collection, Kalamazoo, Michigan, 2006.
Citations: Personal communication with the owner, 2004.
Description: A one-legged man (perhaps a civil war veteran?) wearing a red shirt walks with the help of a pole down a dirt road leading to a lake. At a small inlet on the edge of the lake is a boat or canoe with two occupants. Two tall trees on the right side of the road and smaller trees on the left provide a frame for the scene. The hillside across the lake is forest covered above an eroded bank. The sky is hazy but blue at the top. There are footsteps in the muddy road, a typical Schafer touch of detail. To the right of the two tall trees is a leaning snag. (From a photograph.)
Note: 1. The painting seems to be closely related to Morning in the Adirondacks [3], which is very similar in composition, depicting a one-legged man wearing a red shirt strolling along a dirt path toward a lake. 2. There appears to be a pentimento in the signature on the painting. Just to the left of the first letter "F" there is another faint "F". 3. See the list of forest path scenes for several other works of similar composition, and also the list of eastern United States scenes. 4. Paintings with this title have appeared in at least three 19th century auction catalogs but without enough information to either include or exclude the possibility that it is this painting. See Paintings known only by title for details.
Legend: Said to have been found in an antique shop in northern Michigan in the 1950's.
Identification: Title from the reported verso inscription.
In index(es): Title list, eastern United States scenes, forest path scenes
