Provenance: Sold 12 December 2001 for $5000 + 17.5% by Butterfield & Butterfield, San Francisco, as lot 5164 in sale 7274D, "American and California Paintings"; to private collection, Atlanta, Georgia.
Reproductions: 12 December 2001 sale catalog.
Site: Uncertain; may or may not be Donner Lake.
Description: On the near (left) shore, there is a small encampment with several tepees, campfire, canoe, and figures. It is unclear if the figures depicted are Indians, trappers, or both. On the far (right) shore, smoke from a distant campfire rises. In the middle of the lake (distant), a small vessel with sail can be noted. Four or so birds fly about the lake, several swooping toward shore. (Owner's description)
Note: The painting closely resembles Evening on Silver Lake, California (attributed). In the absence of a title from the artist, it is anyone's guess what lake is depicted.
Identification: Title from unknown source as given by the sale catalog.
In index(es): Title list, Indian encampments as incidental subjects, lake cove scenes, Lake Tahoe and environs, sunset scenes
