[photo] Silver Lake
Medium: oil on canvas
Size: 20 x 36 inches
Inscription: l/r "F. Schäfer.", umlaut resembles a circumflex.
Verso: "Silver Lake" along the short dimension, right edge.
Provenance: private collection, Maryland, acquired with the purchase of a house.
Description: A small, tranquil lake, viewed from a grassy bank a few feet above. At the left is a cluster of three tall but slender and twisted broadleaf trees standing at the edge of a forest; where the forest meets the bank of the lake, three rather gnarled trees lean out over the bank. The foliage and grass colors, mostly greenish-yellows and reddish-browns, suggest a fall scene. In the right foreground, the grass slopes down toward the lake with brush blocking the view of the lake near the edge of the painting. Across the lake is a low, forested peninsula, beyond which rises a steep cliff with a characteristic head; in the far distance a mountain range is dimly perceived through the haze under a cloudy-white sky. (From a color photograph.)
Note: 1. There are a half-dozen bodies of water named "Silver Lake" in California. Another painting with the words "Silver Lake" in its title provided by the artist adds "near Lake Tahoe", but that location is unconfirmed. 2. The site bears a considerable resemblence to that of [Indians on the warpath].
