Provenance: In private collection, Victoria, British Columbia in early 1900's ; by descent to private collection, British Columbia; and again to private collection, Portland, Oregon, by 1998.
Site: The McCloud river flows south from Mt. Shasta into Shasta lake, in northern California. The specific site depicted in this scene has not been identified. The name is derived from Alexander Mcleod, a Hudson's Bay Company trader who first described the area.
Description: "A snow capped mountain range in distance, two ridges lead the viewer to the McCloud river in left front quadrant. Right half of front of painting shows a hill in front of the river with light, from right, shining on wildflowers and trees." "…a snag prominently featured in the light." (Owner's description.) The sky is cloudy, the trees are conifers, the sun is coming from the right side. (From a color photograph.)
