[photo] [Sunset on the Three Sisters, Oregon 3]

Medium: oil on canvas
Size: 30 x 50 in (76 x 127 cm)
Provenance: With Bingham Galleries, 1999; with Clar's Auction Gallery, Oakland, 10 January 1999.
Site: The Three Sisters mountains, Oregon, viewed across a river.
Description: The center of the painting is dominated by three snow-covered mountain peaks silhouetted sharply against a grey, dark sky, the lower reaches of snow having been turned pink by the sun, which is setting off the canvas to the right. The view is up a river valley lined with conifer forests and across a lower range of mountains. On the nearby right bank stand several boulders above the bank; a fallen snag leans down the upper part of the bank. Standing above the right bank against the sky is a tall tree; behind it in the distance are high, rocky cliffs. The left bank of the river consists of a steep rock outcrop for some distance before it turns into a beach on which stands a tent. (From a color photograph.)
Note: Listings of auctions in November 1884, July 1885 (lot 29), November 1885 (lot 20 on page 4), and May 1886 (lot 25) include paintings with this title but the information in those listings is insufficient to either include or exclude the possibility that any of them are this painting. See Paintings known only by title for details.
Identification: Assigned title, based on similarity of subject matter to Sunset on the Three Sisters, Oregon [1] and Sunset on the Three Sisters, Oregon [2], both of which were titled by the artist.
