[photo] [Eucalyptus grove]

Medium: watercolor on artist's board
Size: 11.5 x 9.75 in (29 x 24 cm)
Inscription: l/r "F. Schafer", underlined, in the artist's characteristic block-letter hand
Verso: Windsor & Newton, London, labels; u/l (British pound sign) 4-4-0, in pencil.
Provenance: With Sherburne Antiques and Fine Arts, Inc., Olympia, Washington, c. 1990.
Description: The trunk of a large eucalyptus (?) tree dominates the right half of this Barbizon-style rough sketch, with a background of more distant trees across a grassy clearing. The entire painting is executed in pastel browns, beiges, and blues, and the drawing is quite evident. (From the painting, 8 Sept 1998.)
Note: This painting is quite puzzling. The verso labels and the verso price (equivalent in 1890 to about $30. U.S., too high for an artist's board) suggest that the painting was originally offered for sale in London, but the subject appears to be a grove of trees of a variety found in Australia and California.
In index(es): Title list, Barbizon-style forest interiors, watercolor and gouache paintings
