Inscription: l/r "FSchafer.", in the artist's characteristic block-letter hand, initials conjoined in a monogram
Verso: l/r "Ev. on Goose Lake" in black brush; "83.16" (Craigdarroch acquisition number) in pencil. On the frame… "63", in pencil; "3..COL.WDON" in chalk; multiplication of 14 by 24, in pencil.
Provenance: In collection of Ada A. O'Halloran, Victoria, B.C., by 1974; by gift to The Craigdarroch Castle Historical Museum Society, 1974.
Exhibited: The Art Gallery of Greater Victoria, February 1994 to April 1994. Currently on permanent public display in the castle, in the smoking room, East wall.

Site: Unidentified. There are several Goose Lakes in different states. This painting may be of the Goose Lake in Washington State, a few miles southeast of Mount Adams.
Description: The orange glow of a sunset appears below a crescent moon across a quiet lake with low hills in the background. On the hillside to the left of the lake, two nearby tall, green conifers and two more distant, brownish conifers are silhouetted against the sky. The nearer part of the hillside is covered with a tangle of bright green brush, boulders, snags, and wildflowers. On the near shore is an encampment of three tepees with one standing and one seated figure; nearby is a canoe with one occupant. On the far shore of the lake are two campfires, some tepees, and several hastily sketched trees. (From the painting, 11 September 1998)
