Provenance: In private collection by 1954; by gift to the collection of Rockridge Masonic Temple, Oakland, California, in 1954.
Reproductions: William K. Dick photo #90 (color, 1971)
Site: A view looking East up Yosemite Valley, California, from high on the South side, perhaps at or above Artist's point along the Madera road.
Description: Except for a shadowed tree here and there, The entire valley is uniformly bright; one has the impression of a hot, dry (perhaps Fall, from the orange foliage at the right) day. A tall conifer up a hillside on the left (actually two conifers) and two smaller conifers even farther up to the left are silhouetted against El Capitan. In the foreground on the right are three large boulders, the most distant being intensely white. Bridalveil Fall, directly behind the white rock, is half-obscured by the trees on the hillside in the distance. Half Dome, and other distant mountains, are silhouetted in the distance against the sky, and Sentinel rock is visible through the haze below Half Dome. An Indian figure walking and a rider on horseback are departing down the trail. Four other Indians are standing and sitting on the trail. One of the four, on the left, carries a staff and is dressed in bright red. On the right, a child stands behind an adult. (From the painting 6 December 1998.)
Identification: Descriptive title of unknown origin.
