Description: A pastoral scene in greens and browns. In the right center stands a large broadleaf tree; the sun brightens its lower trunk and behind it on the right is a green forest of similar trees with an even larger tree filling the right edge of the painting. Under the first tree and to the left is a bright green field with four cows, one of which looks directly at the viewer. On a slope to the right behind the tree stand two more cows. A stream runs under the tree, toward the viewer, then toward the front left corner over some small rapids. Atop the far stream bank is a pyramid-shaped boulder. In the right foreground, through shadowed, wildflowers stand among the grass. In the distance at the left is a low hill and at the very left a small tree. The sky is light blue with several clouds. (From the painting 14 October 1995.)
Legend: The Denver, Colorado, owner is said to have met Schafer in person and acquired this painting, along with six others by the artist, on a honeymoon trip to California around 1891.
Identification: Both photographs are of the same Denver collection. The Alameda Library photograph, provided by the 1969 owner, is labeled "Title Unknown".
