[photo] Blue Canyon, Sierra Nevada Mountains, view from Cape Horn

Medium: oil on canvas
Size: 20 x 35 in (50 x 90 cm)
Inscription: l/r "F. . . . " (remainder not legible in photograph; said to be inscribed "S. F."
Verso: none reported, but see Identification note below
Provenance: Sold 17 October 1979 for $700+10% by Butterfield & Butterfield, San Francisco, as lot 123 in sale 3055
Reproductions: Butterfield & Butterfield sale catalog.
Site: Blue Canyon is in the Northern Sierra mountains of California, between Auburn and Truckee. The Union Pacific Railroad traverses the canyon.
Description: A steep, dark hillside in the middle distance dominates the center and right. In the foreground, a bright cluttered slope supports a few trees and some brush. A river flows to the left below in a flat valley; on the other side cliffs beyond fade into the haze near the center. A few trees stand atop the cliff to the right. (From a monochrome photograph.)
Identification: Descriptive title of unknown origin, as listed in the 1979 sale catalog. The catalog lists the second word of the title as "Carion", almost certainly a misreading of a verso inscription.
In index(es): Title list, unidentified mountain scenes
